Smart home & IoT integration
Custom Home Assistant integrations, Lovelace cards, and automations. If a device has a cloud API, a local protocol, or just a serial bus, I can usually bring it into your dashboard and keep it running locally.
G-Tech Consulting LLCMetro Detroit, MI
I'm Scott Gusler, a software and systems architect. I build custom software, embedded firmware, and smart-home integrations, and I design the identity systems and secure infrastructure underneath them. Some jobs start with reverse-engineering a serial protocol, and some end in a FedRAMP High environment.
Services
Most projects cross a boundary somewhere: a device and an app, a cloud API and a local network, a prototype and something that has to run unattended. That's where I work best.
Custom Home Assistant integrations, Lovelace cards, and automations. If a device has a cloud API, a local protocol, or just a serial bus, I can usually bring it into your dashboard and keep it running locally.
ESP32 and Arduino firmware, ESPHome components, UART protocol reverse-engineering, stepper and motor control, RFID, and sensors. I prototype on the bench and build it to run unattended for years.
Desktop applications, web services, and integrations in C#/.NET, Python, PHP, and TypeScript. I've shipped medical imaging software, EMR software, real-time hardware control, and chat and streaming integrations.
SSO and federation, identity governance, virtual directories that merge many sources into one user record, and PKI with certificate-based mutual TLS. I was engineering lead on a FedRAMP High and DoD IL5 platform used by major IAM vendors.
Infrastructure as code with Terraform on AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure, multi-region high-availability deployments, CI/CD pipelines, and configuration management. Plus the Linux servers, reverse proxies, and TLS that keep sites like this one running.
Eight years running IT for a consulting firm and a school district: Windows, Linux, and macOS servers, Active Directory, firewalls, switching, routing, and wireless, plus the migrations between them.
Selected work
A real claw machine that Twitch chat played around the clock, which grew into a whole arcade. Viewers typed commands and physical machines moved. I built the controllers, the firmware, and the C#/.NET control software that tied chat, cameras, and machines together.
Illustration. The commands use the real syntax.
Integration
Date, time, and duration sensors: time since a state change, offsets, date ranges, seasons, holiday countdowns, and custom automation conditions, all configured in the UI.
Python HACS default
Lovelace card
Per-panel solar production on a drag-and-drop map of your roof, with power and energy views and minute-resolution historical playback. Built for microinverter systems.
TypeScript HACS default
Integration
Water softener monitoring and control with real-time WebSocket flow data, remote shutoff-valve control, and on-demand regeneration. I maintain the actively developed fork.
Python HACS default
Integration
An automation trigger that fires when someone enters or leaves any zone with a given label. One automation covers every work site, store, or family home.
Python HACS default
ESPHome component
Local UART control for Levoit Vital 100S and 200S air purifiers. I contributed PM2.5 fixes, a fan-component rework, and full protocol documentation.
C++
ESPHome component
Reverse-engineered both generations of the unit's UART protocol, one CRC-16 and one XOR-checksummed, to add power, mode, target humidity, and tank-full sensing.
C++
ESPHome component
Turns an off-the-shelf wireless driveway alarm into Home Assistant motion sensors by wiring an ESP32 to the receiver's serial output.
C++
Lovelace card
A seven-day meal planner card backed by any Home Assistant calendar, with add and edit right in the card.

Med-Hot Thermal Imaging since 2008
Clinical thermography software for Med-Hot's medical infrared imaging systems, written in C#, plus custom hardware to drive the camera's pan-tilt-zoom head.

About
G-Tech Consulting LLC is the independent practice of Scott Gusler, a software and systems architect in Metro Detroit who has been shipping production software since 2007. I hold a B.S. in Information Technology from Western Governors University with a cybersecurity focus.
I spent seven and a half years at UberEther leading the integration and deployment of enterprise identity (ICAM) platforms, and was engineering lead on a FedRAMP High and DoD IL5 environment. Before that I spent eight years as an IT administrator running servers, networks, and migrations. Since 2008 I've also developed Totalvision, Med-Hot Thermal Imaging's medical infrared imaging software.
On my own time I built a chat-controlled arcade down to the firmware, shipped games under TitanForge Games, and maintain a growing set of Home Assistant and ESPHome projects. G-Tech brings all of it together: software, hardware, and the secure infrastructure underneath. When you hire G-Tech, you work directly with me.
